Places I have discovered. Organizations I am learning about. Topics I want gathered into one place. Additional useful resources I uncover will be added along the way. Send me your favorites!
Aging
- Area Council on Aging– public or private non-profits serving geographical regions of a state. They offer a range of services that could include: transportation, nutrition, meals, activities, trips, adult day care. Ours has all of these plus an entire dementia services wing!!
- Senior Services– our city has a senior services division under the Parks & Rec. Dept. offering classes and occasional day trips for seniors. (Affordable!) Senior Transportation is also part of our city services.
Dementia
- Alz.org The Alzheimer’s Association is the #1 place to start. They offer a wide range of education to help get one started on this road.
- Local University– UGA has a dementia center. The wait for services is long, but it’s offered at no cost and helps students gain practical experience.
Support (Groups)
- Local–Athens peeps: Join us on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 4:30 pm at the Oconee Library for our Sandwich Support Group lead by me and a local gerontologist.
- Do you have a local one? Check with the local council on aging, local hospices, libraries, some times hospitals and retirement homes also have care-giver and senior support groups. *I am big proponent of in-person community (says the person writing a blog!). I tried the support group in my area and it didn’t fit my needs so I started one. We are only a few months in but I am so happy to be started.
- The Alzheimers Association has a long list of both in-person and virtual options.
- Daughterhood Circles-– Free, virtual, caregiving support groups. “You sign up for a group but if you are having a bad day, sign on that day to any group that is meeting. We want you,” said the leader of the circle I think I have landed on. 💗
- Cariloop-– CPG Episcopal church folks you have this!! Does your insurance offer extra support for caregivers? It might!!
Podcasts
- The Caregivers Journey— also a web page with a REALLY helpful Caregiving Roadmap. I am just discovering this and digging into it.
Episode #72 was particularly helpful– Getting the Most out of doctor’s visits
2. Dementia Careblazers— Episode entitled How dementia impacts the senses. Aired Dec. 4, 2025 **This episode has been especially helpful to me as I navigate the early stages of dementia and try to understand what is happening.
Books
There will be books! What are you reading that is helping? What do I need to read in these early stages?
- The 36 Hour Day– a resource for caregivers of people with memory loss. It’s on my list for winter when this flower farmer has a bit more time.
